Office of the Principal Officer, Mercantile Marine Department (MMD), Mumbai is one of the three districts, others being Kolkata and Chennai . All these offices are under the administrative control of Directorate General of Shipping, situated at Mumbai, of Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport & Highways Government of India. MMD Mumbai's jurisdiction encompasses the States of Maharashtra, & Goa.

MMD Mumbai came into being in 1929 under the erstwhile department of Commerce. Under provision of Merchant Shipping Act of 1923, several other MMD districts also came into existence then. They were Aden, Karachi, Madras, Calcutta and Rangoon. MMD Mumbai is presently located at "Old C.G.O Building", at New Marine Lines, Mumbai-400 020.

The Subordinate offices of MMD Mumbai include MMD Goa. Another Sub-office at Noida (near Delhi) conducts only Examination work. Mercantile Marine Department administers implementation of Merchant Shipping Act, 1958 under guidance and directives of Directorate General of Shipping. Area of implementation covers wide-ranging aspects of Registration of ships and all related matters.
